The Cutoff Date Settles It
For weeks, fans debated whether GTA 6 would miss The Game Awards 2026 on a technicality. The official FAQ now settles it: games must be commercially available on or before Friday, November 20, 2026 at 9 PM. GTA 6 launches November 19, so it makes the cut by a single day. For context, last year's cutoff was November 21, so The Game Awards did not move the date to fit GTA 6.
What GTA 6 Could Compete For
Based on recent categories, GTA 6 could be nominated for Game of the Year, Best Game Direction, Best Narrative, Best Action Game and more. It has already won Most Anticipated Game at The Game Awards two years running, in 2024 and 2025.
The Real Hurdle: Jury Time
Eligibility only gets GTA 6 into the room. Nominations are typically decided by a media jury in early to mid November, before most players have the game. That is why the reports of review copies reaching press before the end of October matter so much. The Game Awards FAQ also allows publishers to provide pre-release copies so games can meet balloting deadlines.
Tough Competition
2026 is a crowded year. Contenders mentioned include Resident Evil Requiem, Control Resonant, Forza Horizon 6, and Nintendo's Ocarina of Time remake, which launches November 5. Rockstar's own history also tempers expectations. GTABoom notes that Grand Theft Auto has won Game of the Year in the fan-voted Spike era but not in the jury-voted era.
What This Means for Indian Gamers
The Game Awards includes a Players' Voice category, and fan voting contributes a smaller share of the overall result. Check the official Game Awards site for how to vote once nominations open. The ceremony is reportedly scheduled for December 10, so Indian fans will see the results about three weeks after launch.
My Take
Making the cutoff by one day is peak GTA 6 luck. Whether it wins is a different question, because jury awards reward different things than sales charts do. But a game this ambitious deserves to be in the conversation, and now it officially is.
