The Numbers That Started a Console War
Just 24 hours after GTA 6 pre-orders went live on June 25, IGN Finds published data from its own affiliate link tracking program showing PlayStation 5 pre-orders of GTA 6 outselling Xbox Series X/S by approximately six to one. By June 27, that figure had reportedly climbed further to eight to one. The numbers spread across every gaming platform instantly, reigniting the PS5 vs Xbox debate in one of the most dramatic ways possible.
Xbox Pushed Back Hard
Microsoft was not happy. An Xbox spokesperson responded directly to Windows Central: "This doesn't represent pre-order data. We've had record orders. People should wait for real data and not clicks on affiliate links." The pushback is technically valid — IGN Finds tracks clicks through affiliate links on its own platform, not actual purchase data from Sony or Microsoft's storefronts. The demographic of IGN's readership, which skews PlayStation-heavy, naturally influences the ratio.
But the Install Base Math Still Hurts Xbox
Here is the uncomfortable truth for Xbox regardless of the affiliate data. Sony has sold 93.7 million PS5 units as of March 2026. Xbox Series X/S sits at an estimated 34.7 million — roughly a 2.7 to 1 hardware gap. If GTA 6 pre-orders are running at six to one or eight to one in PlayStation's favor, that means individual PS5 owners are buying GTA 6 at a significantly higher rate than individual Xbox owners. That gap goes beyond install base math. Sony's aggressive GTA 6 marketing — including a custom PS5 startup animation promoting the game, a "plays best on PS5" campaign, and Rockstar's trailer being filmed entirely on PS5 — is clearly moving the needle.
The $1 Billion in One Hour Claim
Whatever the platform split, the overall pre-order numbers appear genuinely historic. Wall Street analysts have estimated GTA 6 generated approximately $1 billion in pre-order revenue within its first hour of availability. If accurate, that implies somewhere between 10 and 12 million pre-orders in 60 minutes — compared to GTA 5 which took three full days to reach the same revenue milestone. Real official data will not arrive until Take-Two's next earnings report in late August 2026, but the directional signals are clear.
What This Means for Indian GTA Fans
For Indian gamers still deciding between PS5 and Xbox for GTA 6, this data is one more signal pointing in PlayStation's direction. Rockstar's own marketing explicitly says the game "plays best on PS5" — and with PS5 pricing at ₹54,990 for the standard model versus Xbox Series X at approximately ₹52,990, the price difference is minimal. Indian gaming communities on Reddit and Discord are already skewing heavily toward PS5 for GTA 6. If you are still undecided, the combination of Sony's marketing partnership with Rockstar and the DualSense haptic integration makes PS5 the more compelling choice for this specific game.
My Take
Xbox saying "wait for real data" while simultaneously refusing to publish any sales data of their own for years is a genuinely ironic position. That said, IGN affiliate clicks are not pre-order sales figures, and the actual platform split may be less dramatic than eight to one. What is not debatable is that PlayStation is winning the GTA 6 marketing war completely, and that has real consequences for where players choose to experience Vice City on November 19.
