Wolfenstein Returns Fall 2026 With a New RPG — Plus Strong Signs MachineGames Is Working on Wolfenstein 3

Wolfenstein Is Back — Just Not the Way You Expected

After seven years of silence following Wolfenstein: Youngblood in 2019, the Wolfenstein franchise is officially returning in Fall 2026. The catch: it is not a video game. MachineGames, Bethesda, and tabletop publisher Modiphius Entertainment have officially announced Wolfenstein: The Roleplaying Game — a brand-new officially licensed tabletop RPG set in the alternate history universe of MachineGames' The New Order and The New Colossus. The crowdfunding campaign launches on GameFound in Fall 2026.

What the TTRPG Actually Is

Wolfenstein: The Roleplaying Game uses an adapted version of Modiphius' 2d20 system, which has been used successfully for Star Trek Adventures, Dune: Adventures in the Imperium, and other licensed TTRPGs. Players create their own distinct Resistance fighters rather than playing as B.J. Blazkowicz, and undertake dangerous missions against the Nazi forces in Wolfenstein's 1960s alternate history America. A unique mechanic called "I AM PREPARED TO DIE" — a reference to Wolfenstein's notorious reputation for punishing difficulty — has been teased as a distinctive gameplay feature. Modiphius describes it as capturing "Wolfenstein's signature blend of action and tactical gameplay."

The Real Story — Wolfenstein 3 Is Almost Certainly Coming

The tabletop announcement is interesting but the gaming community's real focus is on what it signals about the video game franchise. A NoClip documentary featuring a MachineGames developer saying the team is "not done" with Wolfenstein aired in September 2025. Multiple sources have since claimed Wolfenstein 3 is in active development at MachineGames, with one report describing a casting call already sent out for voice actors. Neither MachineGames nor Bethesda have officially confirmed the video game, but the combination of the TTRPG announcement keeping the brand alive and the developer statement from 2025 strongly suggests Wolfenstein 3 is real and will be revealed when the time is right.

Why This Matters After the Microsoft Layoffs

The Wolfenstein TTRPG announcement landed the same week Microsoft Gaming announced 3,200 layoffs affecting Bethesda teams. The fact that MachineGames is actively participating in a licensed franchise extension — even a tabletop one — suggests the studio is intact and working despite the broader Microsoft restructuring. It is a small but meaningful signal that Wolfenstein as a franchise has not been abandoned despite the corporate turbulence surrounding its parent company.

What This Means for Indian Gamers

Wolfenstein has a passionate fanbase in India, particularly among players who love narrative-driven single-player games with strong political themes. The TTRPG is unlikely to reach mainstream Indian audiences given the niche nature of tabletop gaming in India, but the broader signal — that Wolfenstein is alive and MachineGames is active — is genuinely encouraging for fans waiting for the next video game entry. If Wolfenstein 3 is confirmed at a major showcase later in 2026, the Indian gaming community will respond enthusiastically.

My Take

A Wolfenstein tabletop RPG is a genuinely exciting product for the right audience, and Modiphius is exactly the right studio to make it. But the gaming community is reading this primarily as a franchise health signal rather than being excited about the TTRPG itself. Wolfenstein returning in any form after seven years is good news. Wolfenstein returning as a tabletop game while the video game is quietly in development is exactly the kind of brand maintenance Bethesda needed to do. Wolfenstein 3 is coming. We just have to wait for the announcement.
